Andrew, Riverside, CA “I wish to be In the military”
Andrew has grown up admiring the men and women who serve our country. He likes to wear camouflage clothes, play with toy military planes and ask questions about army life. When he isn’t pretending he is in the military, he is watching G.I. Joe on television. For Andrew, his wish was to become like the people he idolized; he wanted to be in the military for a day.
He received his marching orders to report bright and early at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside. As soon as he stepped on the base, he felt right at home. All four branches of the U.S. military, active, Reserve & National Guard, were there to give Andrew an incredible experience among their ranks. His hosts gave him uniforms from each branch, and he received a tour of all the different air crafts, armored vehicles and boats.
Andrew also met a detachment of Marines bound for Camp Pendleton. The Marines decided he needed more than a flight suit – they made him an honorary Sergeant Major. Many of the Marines joked with Andrew saying he’d only been there for five minutes and had more ranks than they’d received in 10 years. One long-serving soldier was so pleased to meet Andrew that he gave him a collection of coins and medals that he’d collected over nearly 40 years.
Hundreds of military personnel had a hand in granting Andrew’s wish. And no matter what uniform they wore, they were all united in that day’s mission – bringing joy to one courageous kid.
