"I wish to be a storm chaser and see a tornado"

Christian, an inspiring 9 year old was diagnosed with Burkitt’s lymphoma in the second grade. Around this time, he saw the movie Twister and soon became fascinated with tornadoes. Christian and his dad even started conducting their own tornado experiments at home. So when the Make-A-Wish Foundation asked him what his wish was, he knew it was to be a storm chaser and see a real tornado.

Christian and his family went to Lubbock, Texas for his wish. The family headed to the KAMC news station where Christian met the number one meteorologist in the region. Thereafter, Christian and his father began their 13 hour adventure with a real storm chaser. Later, he met several meteorologists who taught him about weather balloons and tracking storms. Christian and his family also visited the Texas Tech University Wind Science and Engineering Center where they learned about the classification of tornadoes and were shown a tornado simulator which was being built. One of the highlights of Christian’s wish was his big debut on the 10 PM news. He was interviewed and helped give the weather report. The coverage of his wish was so extensive that he nearly reached celebrity status.

Christian still talks about his wish whenever he can. Although he did not see a tornado, Christian is confident he will see a tornado some day and is thrilled that he had the opportunity to storm chase. When asked if hard work accompanies tornado chasing, Christian says it like an old pro: “Yes, but that’s the job.”

Christian’s appreciation for his wish is reflective of his amazing spirit and strength that have shined throughout his illness. In Christian’s view Kung Fu Panda, one of his favorite characters, said it best: “Yesterday is the past, tomorrow is a mystery… today is a gift, that’s why they call this the present.”
